Avogadro’s Number
In this experiment, Avogadro's number and the concept of moles will be examined. Avogadro's number is equal to 6.023 x 10²³ and gives the number of molecules in one mole of material. In this experiment the student will use electrolysis to experimentally determine this number. The electrolyte is H₂SO₄ and the change in the mass of the copper reacting is determined. The reacting mass is associated with the total charge passing through the circuit, and as a result of the calculations, the student determines the Avogadro number. This is an experiment that combines the basic principles of chemistry with electrolysis and redox reactions.
