Viscosity
In this experiment we are going to study viscosity. Viscosity, defined as the resistance to flow, is associated with the internal friction of a fluid and is affected by its intermolecular forces. In this experiment the student is able to compare the viscosity values of three liquids (isopropanol, glycerol and propylene glycol) and associates them with the strength of their intermolecular bonding i.e. ability to form hydrogen bonds for this specific case. In addition, the effect of temperature, is examined and is associated with the mobility of atoms as a function of temperature. A simple rheometric method - release of a small body inside a graduated cylinder filled with the liquid analyzed - is implemented. In this way, connection of the body’s velocity to the fluid viscosity is made.
