Description
The Large Hadron Collider(LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research(CERN) and first started up in 2008. It lies beneath the France-Switzerland border near Geneva in a tunnel 27 kilometres in circumference. Two high-energy beams made up of positively charged Hydrogen atoms(protons) travel at 99.9% the speed of light and at opposite directions in separate beam pipes which are kept at ultrahigh vacuum inside this accelerator before they are made to collide.
So let’s put on our VR headset and go and explore this accelerator and these collisions from a closer angle!
